Introduction
Bestead (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is a CBT-informed self-help and habit-building app for fathers on iOS and Android. This Privacy Policy describes how we handle information when you use the app.
Mood entries, journal text, relationship exercises, and reset-tool history can be sensitive self-help data, so we treat that information with extra care.
Bestead is not therapy, medical care, emergency care, or a substitute for professional advice. If you are in immediate danger or may harm yourself or someone else, call emergency services. In the United States, call or text 988.
Information We Collect
Account and authentication information
- Firebase user identifier and authentication status.
- Email address when you create an email-and-password account.
- Sign in with Apple or Google identifiers and email address when the selected provider supplies them.
- Subscription entitlement identifiers used to manage paid access.
App content you create
- Mood check-ins, ratings, notes, and trends.
- Journal entries, guided prompt answers, emotions, and thought reframes.
- Lesson progress, challenge progress, relationship exercises, and profile preferences.
- Onboarding answers, motivation selections, and app settings.
Device, diagnostics, and usage information
- App version, device model, operating system version, crash logs, and performance diagnostics.
- Product analytics events, such as completing onboarding, opening a reset tool, viewing the subscription screen, saving a check-in, or starting a trial. These record that an action happened. They never include your journal text, mood values, notes, or reflection answers.
- A random analytics identifier for your app installation, and your account identifier once you sign in.
- Approximate location, at city level, derived by our analytics provider from the network address your app connects from. We do not collect precise location and the app requests no location permission.
- On Android, campaign parameters supplied by Google Play when you install from a link we advertise, so we can tell which campaign led to an install.
- Notification settings if you enable local reminders.
How We Use Information
- Provide mood tracking, journaling, lessons, challenges, relationship exercises, exports, and reset tools.
- Authenticate users and keep account and subscription state in sync.
- Process purchases, restores, renewals, trials, billing status, and subscription access.
- Send reminders or app notifications when you enable them.
- Diagnose crashes, fix bugs, improve reliability, and understand feature usage.
- Respond to support, privacy, deletion, and account requests.
Storage and Sync
Bestead is designed around local-first storage. User-generated app data is stored on your device using platform storage. The current Android app keeps mood entries, journal text, progress, and settings on the device and does not upload that content to Firebase. Where account sync is enabled in a supported app version, app data may be synced to Firebase Firestore so it can be restored or used across sessions.
Crisis reset resources are bundled locally and do not require a network connection.
AI Processing
Some Bestead features may use AI-powered reframing or reflection support. When you use those features, the relevant prompt text and context needed to provide the response may be sent through Firebase Cloud Functions to an AI provider such as OpenRouter. Do not enter information you do not want processed for that request.
Third-Party Services
We use trusted service providers to operate the app:
- Firebase Authentication: anonymous, email-and-password, Apple, or Google account authentication, depending on platform and your choice.
- Firebase Firestore: account data sync only in app versions where sync is enabled.
- Firebase Crashlytics and Analytics: reliability diagnostics and aggregate feature usage only in app versions where those services are enabled.
- PostHog: product analytics for the events described above, hosted in the United States. Journal, mood, and reflection content is never sent to PostHog.
- RevenueCat: subscription entitlement, purchase, restore, and billing status management.
- OpenRouter: optional AI processing only when an AI-powered feature is available and you choose to use it.
- Apple and Google: account sign-in, in-app purchases, subscriptions, and platform system services.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not use third-party advertising networks in Bestead.
- We do not collect precise location data, and the app requests no location permission. Our analytics provider does derive an approximate, city-level location from your network address.
- We do not use analytics to read what you write. Journal entries, mood notes, and reflection answers stay on your device.
- We do not provide emergency response, diagnosis, or medical treatment.
Retention and Deletion
Local app data remains on your device until you delete it, delete your account, or uninstall the app. Synced account data is retained while your account remains active. You can request deletion through the app where available or by contacting us.
See the Bestead account deletion page for in-app steps, the email request option, what is deleted, and applicable retention periods.
Some purchase, transaction, fraud-prevention, diagnostic, and legal records may be retained by Apple, Google, RevenueCat, Firebase, or us as required for security, accounting, legal compliance, or app-store operations.
Your Choices and Rights
- Turn reminders and notifications on or off in your device settings or the app settings.
- Restore or manage subscriptions through your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings.
- Request access, correction, export, or deletion of your information by contacting us.
- Turn off analytics sharing at any time in the Android app under Settings, in the Privacy section. Turning it off stops analytics events, the campaign parameters, and the approximate location derived from them.
- Delete an individual journal reflection by opening it in the app and choosing Delete.
- Delete the app from your device to remove local app data stored only on that device.
Children's Privacy
Bestead is not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age required by local law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
We use platform security measures and encrypted network connections to protect information in transit and at rest. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The effective date above will be updated when material changes are made.
